Add or Remove Programs Slow Loading?
If it takes minutes, i.e. in a really slow and painful speed, to populate the list of Add or Remove Programs in your Windows Control Panel, it’s usually because some system files have been corrupted or the list is too long for too many installed software. Here is a simple way to make it fast in seconds as ever.
Repair Corrupted System Files
- Click “Start”
- Click “Run”
- Input “sfc /scannow“
- Click “Ok” .
Then the corrupted files will be repaired after a long wait. During the progress, you’ll be required to insert your Windows CD to extract the original files to replace the corrupted files.
Make Uninstall List Shorter
- Click “Start” and click “Run”
- Input “regedit” and click OK.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall in the left pane. Click “Uninstall” and click “Export” on the File menu to save a backup first.
- Open “Uninstall” folder and locate the keys for the programs that you will not likely to remove in future, e.g. Windows Service Packs, Windows Hot Fixes and etc. You can know the program that each key stands for by looking at “Display Name” item in the right panel. Right-click any unneeded keys there and click “Delete” respectively.

My Windows installation CD comes on the original Toshiba Recovery and Applications CD. When I insert either disk 1 or disk 2 it doesn’t recognize the CD as the right Windows CD. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rick

Thanks a lot, this really helped.
I did solution #2 and deleted all keys that said “Update” or “Hotfix”, and now Add/Remove programs loads at least 20x faster. There was a lot to delete (after backing up of course), but this solution is well worth it.
